Bayswater, Queens
Bayswater is a small neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens, on the eastern end of the Rockaway Peninsula. The community is located to the northeast of Far Rockaway, along the southeastern shore of Jamaica Bay. The neighborhood is part of Queens Community Board 14.〔(Queens Community Boards ), New York City. Accessed September 3, 2007.〕
One of Bayswater's early developers was William Trist Bailey, hence the street name Bailey Court, who had purchased the property and laid out the community c. 1878.〔(The Rockaways ). Accessed October 2, 2007. "The Bayswater section was laid out about 1878 by William Trist Bailey, who purchased the property from J.B. and W. W. Cornell. The first Rockaway hunt with hounds started from this spot and the first yacht club was erected there."〕 Once the location of a number of summer hotels such as the Elstone Park and the Sunset Lodge, Bayswater is now a year-round residential neighborhood. Bayswater has a diverse population with large numbers of Black and Orthodox Jewish residents. The (Bayswater Civic Association ) represents the area.
